Mineral-hosted biofilms in the continental deep subsurface

Who are the mineral-hosted microbes?
How do they get their energy? - are they eating/breathing the minerals?
What role do minerals play in controlling biofilm diversity and biomass?

We can use what we know about the fracture fluid chemistry and host rock lithology to first do some thermo modelling to predict which minerals might be good energy sources at DeMMO.

This figure shows Gibb’s free energy on the x-axis with exergonic reactions to the right of the dotted line, and the various colors denote the different minerals we modeled with a the available dissolved electron donors and acceptors.

And you can see that all of these minerals can be energy yielding in the right reaction, but some seem to generally be better energy sources than others

for example e see that the majority of these are reactions with the a mn-oxide mineral called pyrolusite, so from this we can predict that pyrolusite could be a preferable electron acceptor for members of the biofilm communities, and we can test this out using field experiments to see if anything interesting happens when we introduce these minerals to the communities
